We're Fundraising for More Kids to Have a Community of Belonging
It began with knocks on apartment doors to offer a helping hand. It's transformed into a movement improving kids mental wellness.
At age 11 Serena moved into a friends house while her mom was on the streets. That friend was already attending We Belong PDX so Serena joined too. Upon first meeting Serena she was quiet, easily frustrated, often giving up on activities, and seemed to have a sad spirit as she tunnel visioned into her phone. The shift was slow at first, but after a couple months of consistently attending, it became incredibly visible. A year later we see an entirely new Serena. She's talkative, engaged, fearlessly trying new things and full of smiles.
The amount of adversities our kids are facing is heartbreaking, but to offer a free afternoon space where connections are formed that affirm kids they're not alone in facing them is our heartbeat.
